The Weather - Learn French

The weather is an important subject for French people. When meeting someone on the street, especially in small villages, they don’t forget to mention the weather: they complain about it if it’s too cold, too hot, rainy or windy. In this lesson you are going to learn all about the weather vocabulary.

F Reminder: the seasons in French are: l’hiver  - le printemps – l’été – l’automne (winter – spring – summer – automn)

 The weather vocabulary: Quel temps fait-il / What’s the weather like ?

F Examples :

-       Aujourd’hui il pleut.  – today it is raining.

-       Demain il va neiger sur toute la France.  – Tomorrow it will snow all over France.

-       Le temps venteux est excellent pour faire du char à voile.  – The windy weather is excellent for land sailing.

-        Quand il neige, les enfants sont heureux. – When it snows, kids are happy.

-       Quand il pleut, on a besoin d’un parapluie. – When it rains, an ombrella is needed.

-       Il est dangereux de rouler vite par un temps brumeux. - It is dangerous to drive fast through a foggy weather.

-       Lorsqu’il y a du vent, on peut faire du cerf -volant.- When it’s windy, we can do kite flying.

• The temperatures : Quelles sont les températures prévues ? – What are the temperature forecasts

    Les températures prévues pour cette semaine sont à la baisse. – there is a drop in the temperature forecasts.

    Aujourd’hui, il fait deux degré à Paris – Today, the temperature is two degres.

    En été les températures sont élevées, donc on peut se baigner dans l’océan. – In the summer, temperatures are high, therefore we can swim in the ocean.

F Note: in French, the temperatures are measured in Celsius not in

Farenheit. To convert a temperature in Celsius to Farenheit you   can this formula: (Temperature in Celsius x 2) + 32 = Farenheit temperature
