Formal Vs Informal in French
Formel vs informel / Formal vs. Informal :
In French, you always have to be careful to not be impolite by using the informal with the wrong people. In this lesson we are going to study the different characteristics of both formal and informal.
1. When there is a negation: “ne...pas (not)/ ne...jamais(never)/ne....rien(nothing)”
F Example: ( formal vs informal)
- Tu ne vas pas jouer au tennis - Tu vas pas jouer au tennis. / (You are not going to play tennis)
- Tu ne m’écoutes jamais quand je te parle - Tu m’écoutes jamais quand je te parle ( You never listen to me)
- Tu ne fais rien comme il faut! – Tu fais rien comme il faut! (You do nothing properly)
Note: ne disappears in the informal

2. When there is an interrogative sentence:
In formal French, the verb and subject are inversed when a question is asked:
F Venez-vous ce soir? - are you coming tonight? (formal)
In informal French, there is no inversion:
F Vous venez ce soir? (informal)

3. When indefinite demonstrative pronouns like ceci or cela (this or that/ formal) are replaced by ça ( this/informal)
F Examples:
- Cela fait des mois que je ne l’ai pas vu – ça fait des mois que je ne l’ai pas vu. (it’s been months since I saw him/her)
- Ceci est une lettre – ça c’est une lettre (this is a letter)
4. Simple tenses are used for formal French whereas compound tenses are used in informal French
F Examples:
- Il mangera avec sa mère (formal) – Il va manger avec sa mère (Informal) – /He will eat with his mother.
